If you have ever been to Japan, the Shibuya district in Tokyo is a highly popular place for younger teens to hang out and socialize. That is why Square Enix took the liberty to make this the setting for their latest Nintendo DS game entitled The World Ends with You. For people who have never been to Japan, this will be your first hand experience seeing the environment Shibuya has to offer through the game. The reason for this is simple; the locations within the game are actual locations in Shibuya.
The story begins with a 15 year old boy by the name of Nek Sakaraba, who likes to listen to music and draw graffiti. What makes Nek’s life interesting is the fact he wakes up one day in the middle of Shibuya for unknown reasons. Before he knows it he begins to hear voices from other people surrounding him in his head, which seems to be caused by a mysterious badge he holds in his hands. As soon as he realizes the badge in his hands, he receives a cell phone message telling him if he wants to keep living, he must complete missions and survive in Shibuya for seven days.
If this doesn’t make much sense to you, I wouldn’t worry too much since the game will properly fill you in as you progress. The game plays out like a traditional RPG but only in 2D form. A key element of the game is the “psychic scanning system” ability that Nek can use to probe the minds of people he encounters around him. This ability also allows you to gain information regarding a mission or uncover hidden enemies and once found, you will go into battle by touching them with your stylus.
You will take control of two characters during the heat of battle. The bottom screen of your DS will act as your battle controls, which allows you to execute certain attacks according to the different motions you use with your stylus. Various attacks require various motions on the bottom screen and each attack is associated with the type of badge you are wearing. Throughout the game there will be a total of 300 different badges, so that should give you a good idea of how many different attacks there are.
The second character, which is Nek’s partner, is viewed using the top screen of your DS. Your partner character’s attacks will be executed using the D pad. To help you understand what may be going on if you get somewhat confused, there will be a light to guide you that moves between both characters. The character that is within the lights area will have increased attack power, letting you know this is the character to be using more frequently.
Some partners will come with extra bonuses, such as cards being displayed face down at the top of the upper screen. By inputting the correct D pad commands given to you at the bottom of your screen for each card, you will be granted a super attack to be executed on your enemies.
The World Ends with You is not typically a game that Square Enix is usually known for releasing, but does offer a refreshing experience from the norm. With a interesting storyline and traditional RPG elements still intact, the Nintendo DS continues to expand on its library.
