News flash! People really like Call of Duty 4! Ok, so that’s not actually news you can use, but perhaps you didn’t know just how influential CoD4 is. Not only is developer Treyarch using the CoD4 engine in its upcoming CoD game, World at War, but they’re also taking the engine outside of the military franchise. And the name of the other game they’re using it for is Bond. James Bond… er, 007: Quantum of Solace. If you’ve been paying attention to how the Bond series is coming along on the movie side of things, you’ll notice that that is also the name of the upcoming film, which also means you’re probably wary of yet another movie-licensed game (the game also includes the events from Casino Royale). Well, Treyarch has some ideas that might make you think twice about dismissing their game.
Quantum of Solace mixes FPS gameplay with a third-person cover system, two different play styles that Treyarch hopes can accurately express what Bond is all about; sneaking, shooting and having a sense of where one is in an environment so that you can formulate a plan to get out of sticky situations. And there will be times when you’ll be making decisions on how to best tackle a scenario. Do you blast your way into a room of dudes and have a massive firefight, or would it be safer to sneak past and not risk getting shot? Or perhaps even a combination of both stealth and enemy neutralization, executing a silent kill by clicking in the right stick and following a very brief QTE-style prompt. Each are possible options, and whichever one you feel more comfortable with is still totally Bond. Even in cinema scenes, QoS will be oozing with that classic Bond style.
As in the movies, Bond isn’t always just killing guys. He has to find time to sleep with beautiful, often foreign women, as well as take part in your typical action movie scenes. In one level, your Daniel Craig-ified Bond must chase down another character, and some of this chase scene takes place on the rooftops of an Italian city. This of course means a lot of death-defying leaps, more evidence that QoS is a real-deal Bond experience.
Naturally, you might be wondering about multiplayer modes – after all, any mention of James Bond video games should bring back fond memories of shooting friends in Goldeneye 4-player split-screen back in the Nintendo 64 days. Now with all of the current-gen’s systems’ online capabilities, you can bet that QoS multiplayer will be something special. Though online matches cap at 12 player (which could be a good thing if you know about the kind of people flooding Xbox Live), so far from what we know, there are a few cool modes available. In “Bond VS”, you and the other players compete to finish a variety of mission objectives before everyone else, and of particular interest is the Golden Gun mode. Prepare for lots of scrambling and then, lots of scrambling away to save yourself from being the victim of a one shot kill. Like any multiplayer game these days, the more you play, the more “perks”, better guns, etc. you’ll have access to, and you purchase these through in-game cash you earn. The money can also be used to customize your avatar’s appearance.
The visuals at work here are decent enough – not the greatest thing you’ve ever seen, but still good. Virtual Daniel Craig looks enough like real life Daniel Craig, as well as sound like him since the actors of the films do the voice acting for the game.
James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace is due out in just a mere 2 months (that’s November 2008, for those of you keeping score), so sit down with your favorite Bond films with a martini in hand now to get your mind thinking like James’. A spy has to be prepared for anything, like the shock of a decent movie-licensed game, for example.

on Sep. 21, 2008 The movie is supposed to be pretty badass...the most action-packed bond film to date, apparently. One guy died, they wrecked over 20 Aston Martin's, and Craig had his finger cut off!
