First things first, do not call this upcoming title from publisher Gamecock “Legendary: The Box”. Not just because it’s a silly name, but that’s also not what it’s called anymore. After the gaming community made their voices heard that they disapproved of the weird title, developer Spark decided to appease their fans and remove “The Box” from the name. However, said Box is remains a crucial part of the game’s plot itself.
Charles Deckard, a major player in the black market, is hired by a shady organization called the Black Order to steal Pandora’s Box from a New York City art museum. Unable to understand the true power of the box and fueled by his curiosity, Deckard opens the box and sets free the horrors within; we’re talking stuff that was thought only to be legends and tall tales. Werewolves, griffons, and minotaurs now rule NYC, and if that weren’t a big enough headache, the organization that hired Deckard and a rival faction called The Council of 98 are now at war, both hoping to gain control of the box. Geez, what a mess. And it’s a mess you, the player, are probably familiar dealing with.
Anybody who’s anybody has played at least one of the Halo games. Some of the skirmishes that will take place in Legendary should be similar to those found in Halo and even other FPSes – battles being fought on multiples sides. You can join in certain battles or you can sit some out and wait for your enemies to kill each other, then run in and pick up the scraps. Whatever you do though, the combination of mythical beasts and enemy soldiers – both said to react realistically and intelligently to their surroundings – should make for some interesting encounters. Even more interesting are the game’s boss fights. Some are supposed to be several stories tall, like the Kraken. Footage of the game also reveals a giant stone golem-looking boss, crashing through the city streets.
Graphically, Legendary certainly looks decent but gamers looking for something as beautiful as something like say, Bioshock, might be disappointed. But still, during the sequence we mentioned of the golem, you can’t help but still be impressed. Looking up at the thing, you’ll notice its size in relation to the towering skyscrapers that surround, and you get a real sense of what you’re up against. This even comes through during the times when the lesser creatures are wreaking havoc. The streets are filled with cars locked down in traffic, pedestrians are weaving between the cars trying to escape the griffons that are swooping down from above and tossing other cars around. Again, it looks amazing, like something out of a cool disaster movie. Even what appears to be the most common enemy in the game, the werewolf, impresses. They’re quick and they travel in packs like you would expect from a wolf, and getting a clear shot at them can prove to be quite difficult – not just because of their speed, but also because of how unpredictable their movements are. They run around like, well, an animal running amok, and their ability to scale walls makes things all the more harder. It should also be noted that the werewolves can regenerate if you don’t finish them off by decapitating them. So good luck with that…
The road for Legendary has been a long one. Spark went through a few publishers to get where they are now, but the game is just about ready and is scheduled for a release sometime in September. All we can do now is sit and wait. And hope the game lives up to its namesake.
